Ok so I obviously reeeaaally suck at photo challenges. Fail. Maybe next time I will attempt a photo a day challenge with my cell phone instead of my nikon. I bet I'll make it much further. Hope none of you were relying on me for that lol. On to other things.

I've been wanting to do a blog post on a before & after to give everyone a better idea of what exactly I do after I'm done snapping the photos and uploading them to my computer.

I put the utmost care into my work. Whether it be corresponding back and forth with a client through email, gathering inspiration for an upcoming shoot, or executing those ideas throughout a session. But the work doesn't end there. When I'm done with a session I go home and transfer all those little pieces of art onto my external hard drive. Then I begin the weeding process. Some photos are of course better than others. Once I have it narrowed down to the best of the best I begin my editing process, one of my favorite parts of being a photographer. I love styling a session but in all honesty this is where I put that final touch; my own little spin. This is when I create most of my magic.

I use Photoshop and a few key actions to edit all my photos. Now not all photos need a whole lot of attention but every little bit counts. Most of the time I run one action, add a little tweaking and BAM! But every now and then it takes a little more on my part. Not every set up is perfect and some unsightly things creep their way into a photo. For example: I did a bridal session at a beautiful house in Brandon a couple months ago. "Heart of Pines is a Bed and Breakfast Inn and event destination that captures the essence of a warm, sophisticated elegance and charm of an earlier time. It is tucked away on 150 beautiful acres surrounded by pine trees." This breath-taking Victorian house was built in 1902 and is the perfect setting. But, there were a few things that weren't ideal for a bridal portrait. Let me just show you what I'm talking about...

As you can see there was a tv to the left and a speaker behind and to the left of the subject. Now I may have been able to move those things but considering this is not my home and the bride and I were so graciously granted permission to shoot here I didn't really feel comfortable moving anything around. So I worked with what I had (which was a GORGEOUS bride, aka my best friend) and I edited those things out of the photos.

Obviously not every situation is like this but I just wanted to share with everyone what I can do and what I will do to make a photo, my artwork, the best that it can be. And this takes time and lots of it. I know most people appreciate great photography and what goes into it but some people are just unaware of what it takes. I hope this post gives you a little bit more insight and helps you to understand. Also, brides (and family of brides) this is why it takes a few months to get your wedding photos back. It's because I care and I want you to have the best.

I found this February photo challenge over on my friend Whitney's blog and thought, "How fun! I shall play along!" And I encourage you to pick up your camera and play as well. We're only a couple days behind!

So...day 1. I cheated a little on this one...I took this photo about a month or so ago but had not done anything with it so I figured this was a perfect opportunity. This is the view out of my kitchen window. My backyard and a beautiful lake. Isn't our plant window awesome?!

Day 2. Words. This is Keller's nursery and yes, Mommy still has pictures to hang on the wall. Typical.

Day 3. Hands. I wanted a picture of Keller's hands but he wouldn't sit still long enough. These are my hands obviously. Complete with my grandmothers' rings. My mom's mom's on the left and my dad's mom's on the right. I get so many compliments on both and am so honored to own them :)

Peacock Perfection

The UPS man made a special delivery yesterday!! I was seriously like a kid on Christmas morning :))

While I was at Imaging USA I made my very first Drop It Modern purchase! This backdrop is FINE! It's called "Peacock". Please excuse the creases...I was way too excited to not take pictures right away and I don't have a steamer on hand, so... but I think it still looks good even with the creases! And Keller was just as excited to be my model! :)) What do you all think of my new backdrop??

It's All In The Details

Happy Monday everyone! I thought a great way to start the week off would be with some detail shots of an engagement session I did over the weekend.

I met up with Whitley & Joey at Mynelle Gardens in Jackson. I had never heard of this place before but I will definitely be going back sooner than later! A gorgeous location (even in the winter)!

Now, it really is all in the details. Whitley took the time to think about her session, what type of look she wanted, and even brought along some awesome props!

I think I'm going to have to make a painting of this one below :)

So whether you are planning an engagement, bridal, newborn, or family session. Take a minute and think about the style you are looking for. Picnic, vintage, urban, industrial? And then consider some props to bring along that will serve as key details in your session. I'm all for providing what I have, but I don't have an everlasting supply of props (for now, anyways) so please feel free to bring along anything you want to include! The more you put into your session, the more you will get back. Just the way the world works people.

Imaging USA 2012

So last Saturday I hit the road to head to New Orleans for my first time at Imaging USA. It was a GREAT trip and I hope to be able to go back again next year. For those of you who don't know, "Imaging USA convention and expo, hosted by Professional Photographers of America, features the largest photography expo in North America, educational sessions on the artistic and business side of photography and the International Print Exhibit. Imaging USA is the first major photographic event of the year that brings together the forward-thinking photographers and business leaders whose ideas spark innovation and change in the industry." --Imaging USA

Erin & I meticulously picked which speakers we were going to see and for the most part I think we made the best choices. First on the list: Zach & Jody. These two were fun, hip, *southern*, and gave great advice that just made you say, "duh". Next on the agenda was Julie Klaasmeyer. This woman does exceptional, gorgeous work and is a big inspiration when it comes to babies. She knows what she is doing.

The second day of the conference we saw two big name wedding photographers. One, Robert Evans, known as the "Hollywood Celebrity Photographer" with weddings such as TomKat and Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston gracing his portfolio of beautiful work. Two, Kenny Kim, who has only been in the business since 2005 is known for amazing destination lifestyle weddings. I need to take a tip or two from him, I mean who wouldn't want to travel all over the world shooting fabulous weddings?!

And the third and final day of the conference we saw two more photographers, with completely different styles, but both AWESOME none the less! Joey L., now 22, has been doing commercial work since he was like 16 or 17. This guy just blows me out of the water!! He currently works with big name companies like the History Channel, FX Channel and Summit Entertainment. You know those sexy photos of Edward and Jacob that grace the movie poster for Twilight? Yea, he took those. I may never get into commercial work (maybe) but this guy definitely has me inspired to get out and shoot more for ME. His personal work is breath-taking and speaks volumes. The other awesome photographer, Sal Cincotta, has only been in the photography business since 2007! What is awesome about this guy you ask? Well first of all he is funny as shit. Yes, I said shit. And he will too. But he is very open to discussing the business side of photography, giving advice and tips on pricing, marketing, and anything and everything else you may need to know about running a successful photography business. Sal is located in St. Louis, Missouri and grossed $1 MILLION last year so he is obviously doing SOMEthing right!

Another great thing about Imaging USA besides informative presentations is the EXPO! I walked out of there with a few free goodies, special show discounts on a gorgeous backdrop from Drop it Modern and new business cards from Moo, and yes, I did take a picture with an alligator and snake, but only to make my husband jealous! ;)

And last, but not least, what is New Orleans without a trip to the French Quarter for coffee and beignets at Cafe Du Monde? I love those things! And I love good music and art. We came across a couple of cool cats jamming on their gee-tars on our way to the French Market, so of course we had to stop to snap a few photos, but like idiots we didn't ask what they called themselves, or where we could find them online. Dumb. And then to make a trip to New Orleans complete I got to spend an evening dining with my dear friend, Helen. I love and miss this girl so much!

So sorry if I rambled a bit in this post...there was just so much exciting stuff I wanted to share with y'all! Imaging USA 2012 was definitely a success!!!

1200 Facebook Fans!

As promised I am giving away a little happy to my 1200th fan on Facebook! I decided to give away a super cute frame I made a while back. This is a wooden 8x10 frame with a 5x7 oval opening. I cut and glued scrapbook paper to perfectly fit on the face of the frame. Then I painted the edges with a coordinating color. Next I sanded the edges of the frame and scrapbook paper to give it an antiqued look and then finished it off with a coat of mod podge. I think these came out really cute and would be great left empty and used as a decoration or even with a simple B&W print inside. What do you think?

2012 Has Spunk

As always I seem to neglect the blog. Why? I don't know. Maybe that's what my new year's resolution will be...10 days later :D What was, ahem, is your new year's resolution?

Just a week and a half into 2012 and I already have BIG plans! First off my annual "Best Photo of the Year" contest! The contest started off with a bang yesterday morning and ends Friday evening! Get your votes in! You can vote for more than one. All you have to do is visit the Facebook page and "Like" your favorites.

Next up: Seniors, c/o 2013! Are you looking for a photographer? Someone fun, creative, out-of-the-box?? I'm looking for 2, maybe 3 seniors to represent Studio MJW! I've never done a senior session before so you would get all kinds of perks and freebies!! I would prefer students from the Rankin and Desoto County school districts. Send me a hoot if interested!!

We purchased and moved into our first home in June, so not only did I have a nursery to get ready, but I also had a whole house to organize! I want to take this moment to thank my family for all their hard work helping us move, unpack, and prepare us for the biggest day of our lives! I don't think I would have survived the past few months if it weren't for y'all!!

What was the first thing this mommy did after having a baby (besides eating sushi)? Took his picture :) well I orchestrated the pictures but my good friend, Erin actually pressed the button (and SO much more!!)
She also did my maternity photos! :) I referred to the baby as my "peanut" :)This is one of my favs!

WOW! Posting this blog update made me realize just how busy I was after my maternity leave and on top of the holidays too! Whew! Glad I survived my first holiday season working Studio MJW full time. I know I'll be doing a few things differently this year and I'm going to plan out the next pregnancy a little better... ;) if that is even possible...

Me?? Organizer?!

Maybe it's the new house. Maybe it's the new studio. Maybe it's the nesting phase starting to kick in....but I feel the need to organize. I feel like I have lived in mass chaos for the past 6 years, if not my entire life and I really don't want to bring up my children in such a way. So I've been working at getting my new house in order as much as I can (with Mom and Hubby's help) focusing on my closet and my studio. The closet is another story but today I want to share some fun organizing finds that I plan to use in the studio. So cool they actually make organizing fun!

I recently found these file boxes in the fall issue of Better Homes and Gardens "Do It Yourself" magazine. Made from vintage record album sleeves and nestled in custom-made wooden boxes they hold almost any size paper work. You can find them here at freestylegifts.com

I, along with what seems like everyone else, have become obsessed with Pinterest. If you haven't checked it out yet, you need to! That is unless you have absolutely no free time...it's quite addictive. But I came across this clever idea for storage and must say how easy! My husband and I are coffee drinkers and I think those plastic "cans" it comes in from Wal-Mart would be perfect for this project. After a pretty coat of spray paint of course.

I LOVE BASKETS!!! And while shopping for craft supplies for the nursery at Hobby Lobby I found these awesome baskets woven from recycled magazine paper! Now I admit I am the hoarder when it comes to magazines. I don't know when to get rid of them! So I think I will find a youtube video on basket weaving and put those old magazines to work! It can't be that hard, right?? I'm pretty sure the ones at Hobby Lobby looked like the one above, but while I was googling I found some pretty cool alternatives...

Hello All!

Today is July 1st which means a few things for me and my business. A) It has now been a little over a year since I have officially become a professional photographer! Yayyy!!! Don't think I have forgotten about that big giveaway that I mentioned before.... B) It's time to revamp the business including graphics, marketing, pricing, setting up a website, etc. & C) I'm officially on maternity leave until October 1st.

SO with that being said, the next 3 months are going to be committed to house-cleaning (so to speak) for Studio MJW. I will be catching up on all my editing, organizing the not so fun aspects (contracts, receipts, unlimited files), re-doing all my graphics, building a website and raising my prices (just a little, I think I deserve it ;) ). I will be answering e-mails during this time but shooting will be on hold until October 1st.

Starting August 1st, all sessions excluding engagements, bridals and weddings, are going to be $100. This fee includes an initial consultation, 1 hour shooting at the location of your choice, and approximately 20-30 edited photos in an online gallery for viewing and sharing with friends and family. This gallery will also be for purchasing prints. I'm no longer going to give the rights to photos (I have to pay bills too) but I am going to offer web-sized images for the purpose of social networking.

Wedding packages are going to change a little as well, with the smallest starting at $1,000. I am taking this time now to let everyone know of this change. ***IF you would like to book a wedding with my current rates I recommend doing so by JULY 31ST.*** This is only for weddings scheduled from October 1, 2011 to December 31, 2012.

I would like to thank all my clients for their business this past year and look forward to much more and lots of new clients in the years to come!

Mini sessions for anyone and everyone in the Memphis/Desoto area! This is a great deal that you don't want to pass up and will be super fun! The location is going to be a natural/woodsy area with a picnic theme complete with an antique red trunk, vintage quilts, picnic basket and bright pops of color! I'm thinking lots of red apples and maybe some extra large lollipops! :)) This would be a great photo shoot for anyone and everyone! I know it's going to be hot, but that's why it's a mini session!

Session is $35 and includes 15-20 minutes shooting, 5-10 proofs, 1 8x10 print, and a CD of your proofs in web-size format. I will also provide refreshments to beat the heat and as an added bonus, there may or may not be a pool to take a dip in ;)))

Inspiration Board: Nursery

Not sure if I have announced the news on my blog yet or not...but I'm going to be a Mommy!! Yes, baby Keller Leslie will be here soon! He is due August 13th and we couldn't be more excited to meet our little Irishman. I secretly hope he comes out a red head ;))

So what's the first thing an Interior Designer does when she finds out she's pregnant? Start planning the nursery of course!!! I have dreamed about this day for a while now and know exactly what I want for my little man's room... nature. bright colors. woodland creatures. texture. Do you get the idea? If not I'd like to share a little inspiration board I put together. First I decided the color scheme for the nursery would be based on these Sherwin-Williams paints.

After nailing down a color scheme I began gathering photos, images, and prints I randomly came across that looked like "Keller's Nursery" to me. I put together an inspiration board of some of these images and this is what I came up with!

Now, we may or may not be buying a house in the near future so who knows if this work of art will actually be completed before the baby arrives?? If not, I may have to create a 3-D rendering to satisfy my nesting phase. I just hope and pray that we find our house soon!! Until then, I'll just keep filling my brain with fabulous ideas!

Cotton District Arts Festival

A couple weeks ago I had a booth at the Cotton District Arts Festival in Starkville, MS with my good friend Nicole Wyatt of Bohemian Phoenix. We had a great time! Saw lots of old friends and met new ones too! The weather was beautiful and it was a great turn out! Here are some photos from the day!

Towards the end of February I went back to the greatest place on Earth, Starkville, to do another love-filled engagement session. The weather was absolutely perfect and the couple couldn't have been sweeter. Kelsey, who was a fellow Tri Delta, and Dave met while attending Mississippi State University. The story is he was interested in her from the beginning and she wouldn't give him the time of day ;) But of course all good things come to end. Just kidding, just kidding! Kelsey did eventually agree to go out on a date and the rest is history. These two have such a fun and innocent love and I can't wait to shoot their Big Day in July! If only the weather could be as nice then...

{Holley} Maternity

Back in January I did my first maternity session and had so much fun! I traveled to Greenwood, MS to shoot a mommy in her most beautiful form. I like the traditional belly shots that are intimate and sweet, but I also wanted to do something different than the norm. I like to have fun and am a big fan of color! I asked Holley if there were any certain foods that she had been craving because I wanted to incorporate that into the shoot, because I LOVE food too! :) And perfectly enough she has a sweet tooth. Holley gathered up lots of candy and I baked delicious cupcakes! And I had been searching for a reason to use that cupcake tree I got as a wedding gift anyway. I had a good time that afternoon and came out with some really great shots! I was very pleased with the result and hope you like them too!

{Kennedy} & Cousins

I told y'all I was bad at keeping this thing updated. I wanted to be sure and share the sessions I photographed since the last post.

First is a newborn session with Ms. Kennedy. She is the daughter of some friend's of the family. Well more than friends really. I consider this little girl a surrogate niece/cousin. If you can understand that ;) This was my first newborn session and let me tell you, it was a lot more difficult than I anticipated. Babies get tired and fussy real easily and it makes it harder to get that perfect shot. But after working with baby Kennedy for a little while she started to cooperate a little more, aka sleep. We were able to get a few sweet photos and some funny ones too. Her two cousins, Hayden & Ella Grace, joined in on the fun as well. Those pictures speak for themselves!

Aaanndd another MSU couple of course :) I had the pleasure of taking Jordan & Matt's engagement photos last November as well. And I will be the photographer for their big day in June! We shot their engagement session in downtown Jackson, MS and on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Jordan and Matt are a very sweet couple and love the outdoors, playing darts in their backyard, and of course MSU sports! Little Miss Mary Logan

After I finished up with Sara & Matt's engagement shoot, I headed back to Jackson to do a shoot with a little 3 year old girl. This shoot couldn't have come at a better time too...I was kind of in the dumps that day and not really feeling like doing anything (I had just recently gotten back from my honeymoon in the Caymans and realized I left the digital camera with all our photos on the plane :( ). But Mary Logan brought the life back out of me! She really put a smile on my face :) I had lots of fun with her that afternoon and she reminded me of what really matters in life....don't worry, be happy! She really had me cracking up! I would take like 3 photos of her in one pose and she would exclaim, "That's enough!" and then scurry over to the next spot. I'm glad to have gotten the opportunity to work with her and her sweet mom and grandmother.

Sara + Matt | Engagement

I love MSU couples! Sara & Matt are two more graduates of Mississippi State University. Sara & I were sorority sisters...Ain't Nothin' Betta' Than A Delta Delta Delta :)) She and Matt are too cute for words. I had the pleasure of taking their engagement pictures last November...well after we had already tried once in October. But that's another story. I headed to Starkville, MS one morning to capture their love first-hand. They were a little camera shy at first, but after a few shots their personalities really started to shine through...awkwardness and all ;) Matt's not much for photo shoots to say the least, but I think the photos came out real nice and they are true to the couple! Matt proposed one afternoon while they were out fishing, hence the fishing lure photo. I think that one may be my favorite. They make my heart happy and I can't wait to see them tie the knot! And this time I'll be able to witness the vows through just my eyes and not through a camera lens. I'm happy to be just another guest at this wedding :)

Stacey + Landis | Engagement

Stacey & Landis. You will never meet another couple like them ;) They are both big outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of anything Mississippi State related! Which is only a couple of the reasons I wish they lived closer because Jonathan and I would have a great time with them ALL the time! She is a tomboy at heart, but still loves to dress up and try her hand at arts and crafts. You might even find Stacey fishing while decked out in a t-shirt and super cute, dangle bling-bling earrings! :)) Landis is super sweet and comes off quiet at first, but once you get to know him you find there is a very interesting soul dying to get out....and he his very random. This is true. They also both love, love, LOVE their sweet dog, Rivers.

Busy Bee

I've been such a busy bee I tend to neglect the blog... First I want to share the sneak peek of Shannon and Jon Koehler's engagement shoot from the weekend before last. This shoot took place in Tunica, MS among the cotton fields of the delta. I had a blast with this couple and wish them all the best!

Secondly, I want to share little Hayden's fall photo shoot. He is just the sweetest baby and it shows in his pictures :) And yes, he is wearing Ole Miss in some of his photos, but I got him in Mississippi State too!

I also have been working on the invitations for a friend of the family's, might as well be family, baby shower that is next weekend! I love the way they turned out and hope the mommy-to-be does too!

Lastly, I want to remind everyone and inform those that don't know, while I'm in town in the Memphis area next weekend I'm taking family fall portraits. Saturday we will be shooting at Rhodes College in Memphis and on the square in Hernando on Sunday. E-mail me for details and to book a slot. Slots are filling up fast!

Who Says You Have To Go Out For Date Night??

Ok, so I know the economy is tough on everyone, especially me (my husband has excellent money pinching skills), but I still enjoy an occasional date night and Lord knows we can't always afford to go out to a nice restaurant and hit up a movie, which these days are ridiculously expensive. So I got to thinking....what can Jonathan and I do for a date night while still saving money? Have a date night in of course! I've been wanting to go to Easely Amused here in Jackson ever since we moved here and they have this "Picasso Date Night" where you and a date attend and paint a Picasso inspired portrait of each other. Well I'm definitely not trying to hurt their business, because believe me I still want to go, but I just want to share with everyone a fun way to have a date night with your significant other and save on the $$$. So this is what we did...

First I cooked a delicious meal of course. What is a great date night with out dinner? I started things off with an iceberg salad with fresh veggies, feta cheese, and real bacon bits (not the kind that comes in a glass jar, but real slices of bacon that I cooked and crumbled ;) ). Then we had grilled salmon fillets with a side of couscous and bell peppers all drizzled with a quick-and-easy alfredo sauce. And to top things off, cheddar garlic rolls. I'm going to share the recipes for the alfredo sauce and rolls because they are just too easy and good to pass up!

After dinner I got out all my paint supplies and two 11x14 blank canvasses. You can get a set of 2 at Wal-Mart for less than $8. We used acrylic paints and those are pretty inexpensive as well. I'm not really exactly sure on how this project is taught at Easely Amused but we did blind contour drawings in order to get the distorted, crazy look that Picasso is known for. And if you don't know, a contour drawing is done by not lifting the pencil from the paper once you begin drawing. A blind contour drawing is done the same way except you don't look at your paper, keeping your eyes on the subject. You come out with this weird looking drawing, that is unless you looked ;)

We had a great time together painting our Picasso style portraits and I encourage everyone to give it a shot! You'll be pleasantly surprised :)) & you don't have to be artistic, ask Jonathan!

Quick-And-Easy Alfredo Sauce - This stuff is so yummy but it makes a good bit so I always cut the recipe in half!

1/2 cup butter
1 package (8 oz) cream cheese
2 tsp garlic
2 cups milk
6 oz parmesan cheese
1/8 tsp black pepper

Mix all ingredients in a small sauce pan on high heat for about 12-15 minutes, not too long or the milk will curdle, and as it cools it will thicken. If it's not thick enough for your liking add more paremsan cheese!

Cheddar Garlic Rolls - I got this recipe from Real Simple magazine in an article titled "10 ideas for pizza dough" and it's not as good as some Red Lobster biscuits but they are pretty tasty!

1 package pizza crust (just add water!)
4 cloves chopped garlic
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Mix pizza dough according to package instructions. Add garlic and cheese and fold dough to mix. Spray a muffin pan with non-stick cooking spray. Tear dough into 12 pieces and place into muffin cups. Drizzle with olive oil and bake at 425 degrees until golden brown, about 15-18 minutes. Toss in a bowl with melted butter and chopped oregano or parsley. Season with salt.

Jonathan and I acquired this lamp from his grandfather. It has to be at least 40 years old if not older... I decided to spray paint the lamp itself with a white glossy valspar paint. The shade didn't quite turn out like I had imagined but I like it. I used blue dye (several coats) and because of the material it actually came out tie-dyeish....suits me just fine! I may add some green though so it fits more with our home decor. Either way I think it turned out great!

Engagement Session: Monica & Rush

Last fall I had the pleasure of shooting engagement photos for Monica & Rush. I met this happy couple through my husband shortly after we started dating. He lived with them (and about 50 other people) in the white house on the hill. Oh the crazy days of endless parties, tie-dye extravaganzas, and dogs, lots of dogs! Monica & Rush are high school sweethearts and they melt my heart. I don't think any other couple (besides me and my husband of course ;)) are more meant for each other than these two. I feel so fortunate to have gotten to know them and look forward to many more memories! Tomorrow Monica & Rush will tie the knot at the Capital Club of Jackson, MS. I'm so excited to be their wedding photographer! & Jonathan will be playing the guitar and singing in the ceremony :) Lots of luck and happiness to two of the most deserving people I know. Congratulations kids!

Movie Feature Monday

I'm going to start something new. Being the movie fanatic that I am, every Monday from now on (or until I slack or decide otherwise) I will feature a movie, old or new, may or may not have seen to all my readers, or the 6 people that follow my blog. I appreciate you none the less! Now on to the post...As much as everyone is talking about a certain blood sucking, werewolf howling, love lusting movie (don't worry I'm as big a Twilight fan as you), right now I'm going to talk about the OTHER Rob Pattinson movie, Remember Me. From the very beginning this movie has you captured, wondering how all the components fit together? & let me tell you, you won't see it coming. A great story of a guy from a high-class, NYC family just trying to lead a normal life after the loss of someone close. The story focuses on his relationships with those now closer and it all falls back on living in the moment. We should all tell our loved ones how we feel about them every chance we get, for it could be the last. I definitely recommend this, and not just because he's in it.

...and to all a good night! I may not be married just yet, but I am spending my first Christmas away from my family :( It's kind of sad, but definitely happy at the same time. I love my future in-laws and am grateful to be spending the holiday season with them. They are a lovely bunch of folks! I'm just sad to not be sitting with my Daddy right now, listening to 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. A Christmas tradition that I will always cherish. I can't believe there is only one more week till Christmas!!! I still have so much left to do :( I've almost finised my sister's gift (will have a post on this sometime soon!), started my future mother-in-law's gift, but still have my future sister-in-law, my mother, and future father-in-law's gifts to complete. Oh will I get it all done?? I sure hope so! On a happier note, today's feature is on a DIY Fabric Pom inspired by the tissue paper poms from Marta Stewart Weddings. The cool thing about this piece is that it has so many creative uses. It could be an ornament, tree topper, or used as a wedding decoration. The possibilities are endless! I went to Target tonight with my Mom to pick up a few things and was so excited to find a section in the Christmas department that was all nature/rustic inspired decorations. Definitely up mine & Jonathan's alley. Too bad we don't have a tree of our own yet...But when I got on the Target website to find a few, I was disappointed to find none. Or maybe I'm just dumb, but that website is kind of difficult to navigate. So I opted to share this ornament instead...

Fishing is one of my favorite hobbies and something Jonathan and I love to do together. This fish on a bucket ornament from Target would be perfect on our tree :) We love fishing together so much! In fact this is the wedding cake topper we have chosen for our big day!

Ornaments Galore!

Of course I would be behind on my own countdown to Christmas...so I will be posting 3 ornaments today! The first ornament is not a handmade ornament, well unless you're a professional glass blower, but I couldn't resist because it's oh so beautiful!

This glass ornament has a tiny glass angel inside! For the past couple of weeks I've been helping a friend/interior designer decorate a few houses for Christmas. Now these aren't your typical decorating jobs. I'm talking real, hard work. But the end result is always spectacular! Call me next year if you need any help with your home ;)

This ornament is a glass ball as well, but equally unique. I love terrariums! This would be the perfect gift for the nature enthusiast in your family! The website where I found this ornament is sold out, but I'm sure you could easily find more. Or make one yourself!

I am obsessed with owls for some reason. I just can't get enough of them! I think I may have been a Chi Omega in another life or something...but these hand felted owl ornaments are just too cute to pass up!

Handmade Holiday: Day 2

Oh goodness! Can you believe that my mother has finally drug out the Christmas decorations?? & Since there are only 2 weeks left to enjoy them she's decided to take it easy this year and go simple. There's no telling how many boxes of stuff we have, but only 6 made it in from the garage. But to top it off, this year we're going to have a REAL Christmas tree!!! All 22 years of my life we have NEVER had a real Christmas tree! I'm so giddy thinking about it! I did get a real tree a couple of years ago while I was living in Starkville and I can't say that I enjoyed the experience so much. Buying my own ornaments and trimmings was exciting but getting that sucker up a tall flight of stairs wasn't! Needless to say, when time came to take down the tree we just lowered it (gently) outside the window to the ground below. Ha ha! Merry Christmas to our downstairs neighbors ;) Maybe I'll have a better experience this year. Especially since stairs are not involved. But on to the ornament of the day!...

These little cuties are so festive and easy to make! I'm going to make some this year, but I'll be using mine as package decorations :) Won't that be cute?

It's getting closer and closer to Christmas!! Only 2 weeks left of shopping days. Or if you're like me and are b-roke, 14 measely days left of psycho crafting. I really need to get on the ball! Anyways, usually by now I am so into Christmas I am up to my ears in "Fa La La La La's". But this year has been different for several personal reasons. So to help myself (and hopefully you too) get more into the Christmas spirit, I'm going to post 14 days of one of my favorite things about Christmas...ornaments! I love decorating for Christmas :) You'd think I was a designer or something...but surprisingly enough, my house has not ONE Christmas decoration up. I know, it's sad. So instead I'm going to decorate my blog, one day at a time. Now to start the festivities!

Fall Recipe: Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

This year I decided to roast the seeds from our pumpkin carvings instead of throwing them out. Not only are they so delicious & super easy to do but they're good for you too! A truly healthy snack.

Mediterranean Style Pumpkin Seeds

Olive Oil
Oregano
Lemon Pepper Seasoning

Cajun Style Pumpkin Seeds

Olive Oil
Emeril's Essence Seasoning
Tabasco Sauce

First wash the seeds & lay them out to dry over night. Next, pour olive oil over the seeds. Depending on the amount of seeds will determine how many table spoons of olive oil. Just make sure to use enough to coat every seed so the dry seasonings will stick. Then add your dry seasonings to taste. Anything will work, even just plain ole salt & pepper. Then spread the seeds evenly on to a cookie sheet & bake at 300 degrees. I cooked the Mediterranean style for 45 min, tossing the seeds every 15 min. I found that 30 min for the Cajun style was enough because the seasonings were darker. Then let them cool & enjoy!

I think next time I'll try olive oil, salt & pepper, & some grated Parmesan cheese! yummm :P Cinnamon & sugar would be tasty as well!

Happy November everyone!

I'm so happy that fall is here. The trees are turning nicely, allowing for a masterpiece of color! I hope everyone had an enjoyable Halloween :) I didn't dress up this year but I still had a good time carving pumpkins with Jonathan, spending time with Chloe June (aka: Alice in Wonderland) & a little solo arts&crafts time. Here's what we came up with...

The Cake!

Finally found the cake for my wedding next April! I'm super excited about this. I think it fits mine & Jonathan's personalities perfectly. This cake has chocolate sheets on the outside with a wood grain, or "faux bois" detail. The inside will be strawberry cake...yuummm :P I found this awesome cake at Marth Stewart Weddings.

Will it Ever End?

It has been rainging A LOT in Memphis for the past few weeks. So much that I've gotten my money's worth on my rain boots. But according to the 7-day forecast it should be pretty after tomorrow! Hallelujah!! Hopefully I'll be taking some photos of a friend and her precious family next week :) until then a little something to appreciate all the dreary weather.

The Dalai Lama is Coming to Memphis!!

Next Wednesday, September 23, my fiance Jonathan and I are going to the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts here in Memphis to hear the Dalai Lama speak about developing peace and harmony. I am so excited about this once in a lifetime chance!!! It is going to be such an enlightening experience for all who get the chance to attend.

My Dream Dress

I couldn't be more excited to have a custom dress that is made to fit me and would be like none other. This is the sketch I drew of what the final product will look like. Absolutely beautiful :)

DIY: How to Make Your Own Terrarium

My first How To blog! :)

Ever since I saw an article in a Better Homes & Gardens magazine about 3 years ago, I've been wanting to make a terrarium. & I finally did! Here are a few steps that I went by to create my living environment...

Supplies you'll need:

A glass container

Some kind of plant, small or medium, depending on the size of your container.

*Soil (only if the plant needs it)

Small pebbles or rocks

Floral moss & anything else from nature (twigs, acorns, etc.)

& of course water and sunlight

Step #1: Choose a glass container of some sort. A popular choice is to use a vase upside down with an added base, such as a plate or piece of wood. Mason jars work well too. I used what was actually a picture frame shaped like a cube that sperates into two pieces.

Step #2: Choose a plant that is small enough to fit into your container. Trim off any leaves or stems that are discolored or that will touch the container to keep bacteria and fungus from growing and harming your entire terrarium! *I chose an aquatic plant so I didn't need any soil. Also, depending on your container you may need another even smaller planter to put the plant in. Since my container had a flat bottom I opted to place my aquatic plant in a shot glass. I kept the plant anchored using small pebbles and then filled it with water. If you choose a plant that requires soil, be sure to keep the soil evenly moistened.

Step #3: Next, wet some floral moss and place it at the base around the plant. The moss will serve as hydration, keeping moisture in the air, & adds to the effect.

Step #4: Be sure and add some other items from nature for decoration. You could use twigs, acorns, or maybe even a small frog or lizard! I decided to decorate my terrarium with a few tiny starfish :)

Step #5: Seal off your terrarium so the magic can begin!

Remember, not all plants need the same amount of water and sunlight, so keep this in mind. Depending on the plant you choose, you may not have to water again for months. Just be sure the soil or moss stays evenly moistened. Place the terrarium in diffused light (mini conservatories usually heat up too much in bright light). While many plants love the humidity in a terrarium, others will develop problems if they don't have good air circulation. It's a good idea to remove the glass for a few hours every few days or so to prevent fungal or mold problems, especially with flowering plants. Now sit back, & enjoy!

Delta Love

This afternoon I will be visiting a couple of my sorority sisters who just moved to the Memphis area. They are both from Muscle Shoals, Al and such sweethearts. The reason for my visit is to drop off a t-shirt I designed and had made for my pledge class this past semester. The t-shirt commemorates the senior Tri Deltas advancement from collegiate members to alumni through the Circle Degree and our Pansy Breakfast celebration we have with our parents afterward. This is just one of a few t-shirt designs I did while at Mississippi State and something I miss A LOT! I loved doing it and enjoyed the experience so much! Maybe when the time comes that Jonathan and I move back to the Starkville area I can design t-shirts for the sorority again! That would be great :)

I wanted to share this video with everyone. It is such an inspiring and moving piece, not just for Christians but artists too. Not only am I stunned by the piece itself, but the sheer talent of this young woman as well. I believe it took her less than an hour to finish this piece? I've known her since I was a child (her family attended the same church as mine), but I never knew the talent she possesed. I would love to see her work live! She is a student at Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarsota, Fl. Kudos Gable Hunsucker!

Decisions, decisions..

I plan on making as much as I can for my wedding in April, but there is so much I want to do I might drive myself mad! Or have to hire a few dozen elves. I know I will design the invitations and programs myself and I have already decided on the favors (can't wait to make 200+ of those), and I've come up with a few more ideas since then. I was thinking of making my own veil that is similar to this and will most definitely be making the bridesmaid gifts. But on top of all that I also want to make some decorations for the reception, but can't decide what to go with. What do you like best? Felt flower garland...

...or Tissue paper pom poms??

Keep in mind that the table center pieces will be more of plants and herbs than actual flowers. Give me some advice!

Feeling Creative??

Ever feel the need to create something but don't necessarily have the time nor the funds to do so? I feel that way a lot too. Writer's Block

I was told by my coworkers that I needed to update my blog...unfortunately I don't have any clue what to write about. This one said to write about writer's block. This one said to write about her. I think I'll just make a hodgepodge of blogs and sum up the past 3 weeks.

I officially finished my internship and have been awarded my degree. Now I only have to wait about 2-3 more months to get it in the mail.

Jonathan has moved in with me and my family, bless his soul, and we couldn't be happier (especially my dad).

Cooper is doing well and has a home to call his own. Hopefully he'll learn to share it with Jonathan's chocolate lab, Sallie Mae.

Wedding planning is coming along, slowly but surely. I have an appointment tomorrow with a lady who does custom wedding gowns. I'm super excited to think I could have a one-of-a-kind dress. I really like these dresses...

I have decided on the color palette for the wedding - purple and green. But think more along the lines of plum and chartreuse. I'll have to arrange a visual collage to post for eveyone to see.

I really need to get on the handmade/craft bandwagon. Everyday I come up with something else I want to create, but everyday seems to get shorter and shorter. I'm only 22. Why do I feel as though I'm 50?? No, I don't really feel like I'm 50, but time definitely goes by faster when you work full-time.

I've also been wanting to cook and bake. Especially those black bottom cupcakes! Ha ha! But, mom has been out of town for a total of 3 weeks now, out of no more than a month, and she does all the grocery shopping. I refuse to do it and pay for it until I absolutely have to.

Hmm...what else is going on in my eventful life right now? I could delight you with a self-portrait I did in watercolor spring semester. Yes, it's been finished for a good 5 months and I'm just now sharing it with the world. I was going for a Janis Joplin look, but when my mother saw the photograph it was made from she said with such excitement, "You look like John Lennon!!" Thanks, Mom. Really?...I look like a man? Either way I think it turned out great and was much pleased with myself. I think my professor, Brent Funderburk, was just as proud :)

But, the best part? I won a Humanscale desk lamp! This thing is valued at $450!! I'm thinking of putting it on ebay ;) How cool! I was so excited! I never win anything!!
